#6 Metal Improvement Company (a division of Curtiss Wright). The company has 9 locations around the US including Columbus, Ohio, Fort Wayne, Indiana, Wichita, Kansas (3 plants), Lafayette, LA (which by the way makes them the only commercial heat treat of any size in this state-wonder how they ended up with a location here?), Roselle, NJ (formerly Iron Bound Heat Treating bought about 8 years back from the former owner, Mr. John Ross), Salem, Ohio and Emigsville, PA. While the company does an enormous amount of shot peening with the number of plants the company has and a complete range of heat treating services we have no doubt but that Metal Improvement is a company that deserves to be on our list as one of the 10 largest commercial heat treaters in North America. http://www.metalimprovement.com/heat_treating.php #6 on our list of the largest North American Commercial Heat Treaters-Metal Improvement Company.
#7 Gerdau MACSTEEL Atmosphere Annealing (GMAA). Brazil based Gerdau is a mammoth international conglomerate specializing in steel products. For the purposes of our listing of the largest commercial heat treaters in North America our interest is only in their commercial heat treating operations which in North America consists of 4 plants in Canton, Ohio, Lansing, Michigan (2 plants) and North Vernon, Indiana. The facilities focus on annealing, normalizing, stress relieving and quench and temper work of large parts. All low volume, reasonably low tech heat treating, however one that it is critical and Atmosphere Annealing has done very well over the years concentrating on this market. One thing we found very interesting is that their website http://www.gerdaumacsteel.com/aai.htm claims that they are the fifth largest commercial heat treater in North America as opposed to our ranking of number 7. In our conceit we at "The Monty" are wondering whether this ranking comes from a previous listing we did several years ago in which we ranked the company as number 5 in North America in terms of sales-no matter as we have stressed with so many of the large commercials in NA privately owned it is virtually impossible to say with any certainty where each company deserves to be ranked. So for our #7 position on our list of the largest commercials in NA we are suggesting Atmosphere Annealing.
#8 Solar Atmospheres. In the case of the #8 position we are certainly aided by the fact that the CEO and founder of Solar Atmospheres, Mr. Bill Jones is very open about his sales volumes as you can see. We quote; "Our combined HT sales will be $25 million for 2010. Sales for 09 were $22.5 million. For 08 sales were $27 million. Sales were depressed in 09 with delays in titanium processing from aerospace and other commercial applications. Even in 2010 Ti business is only slowly picking up. Bill Jones, CEO." While Solar has some associated processes the backbone of the company is without a doubt vacuum heat treating and in particular vacuum heat treating of titanium. A brief summary of the company comes from their website http://www.solaratm.com/ "Solar Atmospheres, Inc. has three locations in the United States. Both sites in Pennsylvania offer large furnace capacity and advanced ten bar quenching. One is located in Souderton, PA (about 20 miles from Philadelphia) and the other one is in Hermitage, PA (about 60 miles from Pittsburgh). The third location is being built in Fontana, California. Each plant has its own capabilities. Solar Atmospheres, Inc. (Souderton, PA) is the home of over 30 furnaces ranging from lab sizes to 12 feet in length.
Eastern PA serves more manufacturing companies with high volume, but smaller parts. Solar Atmospheres of Western PA's customers include more of the titanium industry and are able to handle larger volume with the ability to operate extensive parts with the largest vacuum furnace in the world, 36 feet long with a work load of 150,000 lbs. Also, Western PA has three 24-foot vacuum furnaces. Solar Atmospheres of California will be able to assist the aerospace industry by having a 24-foot furnace, 2-bar quench with a load capacity of 80,000 lbs, a few small furnaces and an in-house quality lab." To add to these points we will also say that the company was founded in 1983 by Mr. Bill Jones and as you can tell the company has done well over the years.
#9 FPM Heat Treating, http://www.fpmht.com/ with 3 large plants around the US Midwest. While I tend to still think of FPM as largely a continuous shop this perception is not quite as true as it once was. The company does indeed have several large continuous furnaces largely for fastener work however they also offer salt processing, batch IQ furnaces, vacuum and the Nitrotec Process (this is licensed by the TTI Group out of the UK, part of Aalberts.
Nitrotec is a Nitriding, Oxidizing, Protection process which has been quite successful over the years). The company has plants in Elk Grove, IL., Milwaukee, WI and Cherry Valley, IL. Founded in 1979 the company has seen it's fortunes rise and fall with the fastener industry in North America however it has survived and prospered and has now made our list of the largest North American heat treaters every year since we started in 2000.
Interestingly enough at one point in time one of the company's locations was far and away the largest single commercial heat treater under one roof in North America. #9 on our list of the largest commercial heat treats in North America-FPM Heat Treating.
#10. ??? We throw up our hands in despair at being able to unequivocally say who is the 10th largest commercial heat treater in North America. We would estimate there are approximately half a dozen companies which might fit into this spot so we will suggest several possibilities. Vac Aero International. The company has 7 plants on 3 continents http://vacaero.com/ and is the only Canadian company on our list. Specializing in vacuum heat treating of aerospace landing gear the firm is the largest in it's very narrow field. Worth noting is that Vac Aero also builds new vacuum furnaces.Trutech Group http://www.trutecind.com/ The Trutec group consists of 5 plants in North America (of which 4 do heat treating) with corporate headquarters in Springfield, Ohio. The Trutec Group is a subsidiary of Nihon Parkerizing of Japan. Specialty Steel Treating http://www.specialtysteeltreating.com/ Founded in 1956 Specialty has 3 plants in the US, 2 in Michigan and 1 in Connecticut. The company offers "high end" heat treating and should always be considered amongst the largest in North America. Nitrex Metal Treating Services.http://www.nitrex.com/english/about_welcome.htm Mention the Nitrex name and you automatically think of nitriding. With 5 locations around the US (and others outside of North America, Nitrex is certainly an impressive company.Braddock Metallurgical. With the acquisition of Suncoast Heat Treating a couple of years ago Braddock become the undisputed largest commercial in Florida.
